Although late August and early September can make you feel nostalgic for cozy sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes, it is still very much summer. What does that mean, exactly? Well, some of the hottest days of the year are still upon us. Have you ever asked yourself about the effects of the summer heat on your car’s windshield?
Although windshields were designed to withstand both extreme highs and extreme lows in temperature, how quickly the temperature in or around the vehicle changes can be a problem. Interestingly, an accelerated shift in temperature can cause windshield cracks. Even worse, if you have an existing crack or chip in the glass, an extreme change in temperature can, in fact, worsen it. This can quickly take your car from ‘needing a repair’ to ‘needing a replacement’.
The transition of temperature does not just have to be natural. You may think the days of worrying about below-freezing temperatures are still a few months away – and you are not wrong. However, a very hot day may call for strong air conditioning inside the vehicle. Unfortunately, however, a quick shift in internal car temperature can cause damage to the windshield in that same way. Therefore, it is key to gradually increase the coolness and intensity of air conditioning when you first turn the vehicle on.
While it is still hot, try storing your car in a garage or under a covered area to keep it as cool as possible. If that is not an option, consider using a windshield cover. This not only protects the windshield from overheating, but it can also protect it from other elements like rain, hail, and debris blown around by high winds during summer thunderstorms. Under the right circumstances, all of these can cause damage to your car’s windshield which would then require immediate attention.
Finally, do not slam your vehicle’s doors. As you can imagine, an abrupt door slam can cause damage to the integrity of the glass – especially when it may already have a small chip or crack or be compromised by the intense heat of the summer months.
