New 2021 Cars Windshield Tech

Feb 08, 2021

Technology continues to take the automotive industry by storm. In 2021 alone, about 30 vehicles are being reimagined and redesigned. Adding greater technological capabilities, these vehicles are becoming safer and more convenient for drivers. Whether you prefer a sedan, an SUV, or truck, 2021 is shaping up to be the year for a car upgrade.

Just when you think they have thought of everything, a company like Mercedes-Benz introduces a more advanced Augmented Reality into its navigation systems. In September 2020, they announced the Augmented Reality Heads-Up Display (AR-HUD). This display will live on the windshield as a projection and allows the driver to go "through" the screen. This means that animated arrows and directions will overlay the driver's field of view, allowing them to track upcoming turns. For an easier user experience, the arrows begin to blink as the driver nears the next turn. You can find this technology in the new Mercedes S-Class series.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show 2021, a completely virtual event, Panasonic revealed its new Heads-Up Display (HUD) design which will provide a similar experience for the driver – it will essentially turn your windshield into a video game. The Panasonic display will include a guidance route for navigation, cyclist detection, the vehicle's current speed, the street's speed limit, and measurements for underpasses. Although some of these are features already commonly found in existing HUDs, the look of the Panasonic HUD is unique. The Panasonic HUD has not been implemented yet but it seems like we could be seeing it on the market very soon. HUDs are great for helping drivers keep their eyes on the road as opposed to looking at screens – an important safety consideration.

All of these advancements mean windshields are as important as ever. However, gone are the days when you could "ignore" a chip or crack on the glass for a few weeks. An unobstructed view is always important while driving, of course, but with something like AR being added to your line of sight, you need to ensure it is clear as can be.

To ensure your windshield is always in tip-top shape, you can have it inspected by a technician to ensure it is calibrated. This is especially important after a windshield repair or replacement. A professional understands that a repair/replacement and calibration must happen simultaneously. The cameras in the windshield need to be in the right place and at the correct angle to ensure all of its safety features remain unharmed.
