How Do I Clean My New Windshield?

Did you recently get a windshield replacement? That is great news! Your car is now functioning at full capacity to keep you and your family safe during commutes. That said, you might be wondering how to take care of it. For instance, how long do you have to wait before you can wash the car – and consequently the new windshield? What can you use to do so safely?

Once you have a brand new windshield, you have a clean slate. It is free of chips, cracks, and other damages so you can rest assured that you and your family will be safe in your vehicle. The question now is, how do you best take care of it?

In the first hour, you should keep the following recommendations in mind:

  • Do not drive right away
  • Clear both the inside and outside areas of the vehicle so that nothing is resting on the glass
  • Crack a window open
  • Do not remove the retention tape
  • Do not put any unnecessary pressure on the new glass

To keep your windshield protected, try to park it in a shaded or sheltered location – like a garage or carport. This will not only keep the car cooler in warmer climates, but this will make it easier to keep the window slightly cracked to prevent off-gassing and the build-up of contaminants. These small steps can help prevent the need for any additional windshield maintenance from unwanted damage.

You should wait 48 hours after a windshield replacement before you wash the exterior of your vehicle. In particular, avoid high-pressure car washes for a minimum of 48 hours. The pressure can actually displace the moldings because it needs that amount of time to set and dry. Once the two days have passed, you can proceed as normal.

That said, there is no harm in knowing how to properly care for the new glass. To clean the interior of the windshield, consider using lint-free microfiber rags with store-bought glass cleaner or a homemade solution. For homemade cleaners, use one-part rubbing alcohol to one-part water, with a capful of white vinegar. For best results, ensure you have cleaned the exterior to ensure you can see how much of the grime is coming from the inside of the glass.
