After having your windshield replaced, you may be wondering what precautions you need to take to ensure proper installation is not ruined as a result of unintentional user error. There are definite time frames to keep in mind to take care of your new windshield. In many cases, a windshield can be replaced in 30 to 60 minutes. However, this does not mean you can immediately drive to your next destination. Before taking your car out for a spin, consider these tips to protect your new windshield. Tip #1: Do not drive for at least one hour after installation This is very important as the urethane needs time to dry for proper and complete installation. If you don't have to go somewhere, try to let your car sit in the driveway for a couple of hours. After one hour, the urethane will be strong enough to pass all Federal Safety Standards and you may drive your car safely, however, the full cure could take several hours. With Glass America's mobile service, you can schedule your windshield replacement for a time when you are home and do not need to take the car out for some time. Tip #2: Do not wash your car for 24 hours Whether you are doing it yourself or driving through one, a car wash should be avoided for an entire day (minimally) after a windshield replacement. The water will not hurt the seal but the high-pressure jets could puncture the seal. Tip #3: Leave a window cracked for 24 hours As the day gets warmer, the air inside of your car will expand. By leaving a window cracked slightly, the air can escape. This will alleviate any unnecessary pressure on the inside of the windshield. Tip #4: Drive safely and do not slam doors! When you have a brand-new windshield, you need to avoid any unnecessary pressure changes. This is best done by closing car doors gently and avoiding bumpy roads and potholes during your commute for the first several days after installation of your new windshield.
